This presentation will focus on the relationship between maternal substance abuse and exposure to trauma in adults and children. The evolution of substance abuse and its impact on child development and functioning will be discussed, as well as, identification of traumatic stress symptoms in young children and factors that promote resiliency. The session will provide methods to support substance abusing mothers and methods to manage and treat behavioral, cognitive, and affective symptoms of trauma in children. Finally, treatment planning for these families will be discussed.
